All forgotten!
Since the 19th century, historians have still not succeeded in unraveling the mystery surrounding medieval prisons. Dungeons, dungeons or dead ends? Our guide-lecturers will try to unravel the truth from the legends that remain around this mythical space of the medieval fortified castle.
A descent is proposed in small groups in the Alexandre or Artus towers of the Pierrefonds castle, to discover “oubliettes”, latrines and historical graffiti.

Exposure "Viollet-le-Duc and archeology"
Recognized as one of the greatest artists and intellectuals of his time, the architect-restorer Eugène Viollet-le-Duc also demonstrates a true passion for archaeology. Before any restoration project, he methodically explores the remains where his projects are carried out, to extract all traces, works or furniture abandoned by History. Listed and studied, these artifacts represent for Eugène Viollet-le-Duc invaluable testimonies of a forgotten past, the secrets of which he tries to unravel.
The time has come to study the art of the Middle Ages as one studies the development and life of an animated being... - Eugene Viollet-le-Duc
From 2022 to 2024, the restoration project of the Preuses wing of the Château de Pierrefonds, entrusted to Pierre Bortolussi, chief architect of historical monuments by the Center of National Monuments, also allowed the discovery of some unsuspected objects.
The surveys of the walls, the study of the pictorial layers of the vault of the Salle des Preuses and the exposure of the framework and roofing of the wing, revealed know-how and technical biases of a surprising magnitude.
Through this exhibition, discover archaeological objects and previously unpublished iconographic documents, highlighted by a fun and interactive mediation system.
Curated by Thierry Galmiche, Marie-Laure Le Brazidec, Vincent Legros, and Arnaud Timbert.
