Charming, Magnificent, Magical... there is no shortage of words to describe the atmosphere given off by the Château de Pierrefonds! Protected from view by the forest, the castle is a true architectural gem and the masterpiece of the architect Viollet-le-Duc. Built in the 15th century on the orders of Louis d'Orléans, it was dismantled two centuries later and left in ruins. Recreated for Napoleon III, the Château de Pierrefonds is an ingenious interpretation of the Middle Ages. It appears as the most masterful affirmation of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc's theories in the architect's career. Both a stately home and a fortified castle with a complete defensive system, Pierrefonds Castle houses imperial apartments with decor inspired by the medieval era. Today, the Château de Pierrefonds is one of the unmissable monuments of the Oise!
Since January 2022, the Center des monuments nationaux has launched the restoration project of the preuses wing between the Alexandre and Godefroy de Bouillon towers of Pierrefonds castle. The Salle des Preuses is therefore closed for the duration of the work and this work may occasionally result in changes to the visit route.
